Start with trip length — not price
The single biggest factor isn't which lot is cheapest, it's how long you're parked. Below 3 days, the on-airport parkades (YYC Daily, YYC Value) almost always win once you factor in shuttle time and the hassle of finding a stranger's lot at 5am. Past 3 days, off-airport lots open up a 30–50% gap.
Quick rule: 1–2 days → park at the terminal. 3–6 days → either option works, off-airport saves $20–$40. 7+ days → off-airport is almost always the right call.
The shuttle matters more than you think
A 10-minute shuttle running every 10 minutes is fine. A 15-minute shuttle running every 30 minutes will eat half an hour you don't have. Always check both numbers, not just one.
For 5am or late-night arrivals, "24/7 shuttle" is non-negotiable. Park'N Fly and YYC Economy run 24/7. Some smaller lots cut back after midnight, which means an Uber or a 20-minute wait in the cold at the worst possible time.
The 'perks' that actually pay off
Aeroplan or WestJet points: usually 1 point per $1, which adds up if you fly often. Park'N Fly is the heavy hitter here.
EV charging: free with your parking at the YYC Daily Parkade and Park'N Fly. If you drive electric, this might tip the math even if a non-EV lot looks $20 cheaper.
Car wash add-on: a real value if your car's been sitting at the airport for two weeks in winter and you don't want to start your return trip at -25°C in a salt-encrusted vehicle. WallyPark is the main option.
What the cheap lots cut to be cheap
Off-airport lots win on price by running smaller fleets, doing less marketing, and skipping perks. The trade-offs you'll feel:
- Less frequent shuttles, especially overnight
- Outdoor uncovered parking (cars get crusted in winter)
- Smaller booking systems — sometimes phone-only for changes
- Lower limits on oversized vehicles or trailers
None of these are dealbreakers if you know going in. They are dealbreakers if you don't.
When to book ahead vs walk up
In normal weeks, drive-up rates at most lots are 10–15% higher than the booked rate, but spots are available. Books are cheaper but lock you in.
In peak weeks — Christmas Eve through New Year, spring break week, July long weekend, Stampede — off-airport lots routinely hit capacity. Book ahead. The airport-owned parkades almost never fill but cost the most, so they're your fallback.
Red flags to avoid
"Lots" that are really long-stay strip mall parking with a private shuttle. They show up sometimes on Kijiji or Facebook Marketplace. Insurance won't cover damage, security isn't real, and the shuttle might not show up. The lots on this comparison are all properly licensed and insured.
Booking sites that aren't the lot itself. Way.com, Parkos, Spothero, and others are aggregators that mark up the lot's published rate, then keep the difference. The "discount" is usually less than 5% and you give up direct customer service. Better to book direct.
